The National Service Scheme is a unique program of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in various Universities and Institutes of higher education. The program is one of a kind as it aims to produce students who are not just intellectually developed but also sensitized towards their duty and obligations as a citizen of the country. Formally, the National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched on September 24, 1969. The year was the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi. As the scheme is the culmination of the thought of Mahatma Gandhi that aspired to develop the personalities of the students and instill discipline, self confidence, concern for environment, patriotism, ideals of democracy and social justice and at the same time contribute to community welfare.

In Government Degree College, Thalisain, NSS was launched during 2005. At present, the college is running one unit with one Programme Officer. Here, under the NSS, five one day camps are organized annually. In addition to this, a seven days residential camp is organized once a year. The College utilizes its NSS units in extension activities and community services. Various competitions such as poster making, slogan writing, and essay writing are also organized from time to time.
